Please refund skillpoints upon quest completion
If we purchase a skill from a trainer without realizing it is a reward from a quest that we missed (or one that was added in an update), please refund that skillpoint when we complete the quest that awards that skill. There is nothing more frustrating than buying a skill and then realizing later that you didn't need to spend that precious skillpoint. When you're planning on changing secondaries multiple times for fun, like I am, all you can think is "ugh, another day of farming for me to make up for that mistake."

Well, you need to make an educated decision before purchasing a skill. It's all your own decision to purchase that skill, and not look around for a quest before buying it.

I'd think that's a bad idea...
There's an advantage to buying skills instead of getting them and that advantage is you manage to have the skill earlier. You have no idea how much better it is to buy say, Ressurect, early on than it is to get from a quest later on. This isn't a real example, but I hope you catch my drift.

I appreciate your points. I tried to educate my guesses by researching quest skills on the internet, but I still came upon quests that had skills that were not mentioned anywhere I could find on the 'net. And the Prima guide is pathetic, only listing the first 1/3 or so of quests (besides being unable to accomodate dynamic updates). If you know of a thorough and current listing somewhere, I'd be grateful if you could share that .

Er, that's not necessarily fair. Sometimes you can't quest for a skill until a few areas after you have the opportunity to buy it. Unless you look at online strategy guides or sites like this you won't have a clue. Guild Wars sort of rewards players for not optimizing themselves for their team. As a monk I ended up buying almost every useful skill I could, only to find later on I could quest for many of those skills.
Would I do it differently. No. I take my job seriously. I would rather have infuse life now, knowing it might save someone from dying, than wait a few areas and quest for it.
I actually agree with this post; I think you should get skill points in lieu of skills when you already know the skills offered as a reward.
I'd love it more if this could be retroactively applied so I can get my dozen or so skill points refunded. :P

So you want to reward players who are knowingly being less-helpful to their groups with free skills?

Getting the skillpoint refunded if you do a quest that rewards said skill would actually be very very nice. Lets hope they do it.
Alas I don't think it would actually benefit any current players who have purchase skills and completed quest already.
But on the plus side it will be better for future players and future characters you chose to make.

I also think the skillpoint refunds would encourage more flexible and nonlinear gameplay. For example, the other night a guildmate asked me for some healing help on a mission. I noticed I wasn't to that area yet, but having my monk as my second character, I knew a shortcut. So I skipped a few towns and just walked straight there. When I got there, there were some cool new skills, and I bought them... only to realize later when I filled in the geographical gap that I could have gotten those skills for free. So I feel like I was punished for "drawing outside the lines."
I recognize that ANet has made a nice effort to prevent this occurence by only offering skills at trainers after their occurence as a free reward in a quest in "logical game order." But when it's your second or third character (or even first, and you're being different), logical game order isn't the most fun. It's just unfortunate that going outside the box is penalized in this way. I mean, those of us who have already finished the game with one character know just how harsh it is to accumulate new skills past a certain point. Blowing a free skill is like having your check engine light come on... you just know you're gonna pay bigtime later.

Instead of skill point refunds, how about offering new skills, maybe one that isn't buyable earler?
But I do see something of merit in this: for people that switch classes later on, skill points get hard to come by. :|
